The Chocolate Train – Switzerland

The Chocolate Train, Switzerland

The Chocolate Train almost doesn’t sound real, but it is, and it’s every sweet-toothed traveller’s dream. The train runs between Montreux and the Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory at Broc, Switzerland, whisking guests away on an epicurean adventure in grand vintage 1915 Pullman carriages.

The journey takes 7 hours 30 minutes and starts in Montreux, before travelling to Montbovon and Gruyères (yes, cheese), and then onto Broc Fabrique and the chocolate factory. The chocolate train is a must-do for all foodie-loving travellers, combining three of Switzerland’s greatest things; chocolate, cheese and epic alpine scenery.

Chocolate Train route

A journey on the Chocolate Train takes 7 hours, 30 minutes, round-trip from Montreux via Montboven, Gruyère and Broc Fabrique. Passengers board the train in Montreux which travels to Montboven, where it’s a short bus connection to Gruyère.

In Gruyère there’s the chance to visit the show dairy ‘La Maison du Gruyère’, explore the charming medieval town, and even visit the stunning castle. Passengers then re-board the bus head to the legendary Maison Cailler in Broc, a vast chocolate experience with workshops, museum, shop and café, before returning to Montreux. The train runs every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in May, June, September and October and every day in July and August.

The Chocolate Train

The train itself is a glorious vehicle of ‘Belle Epoque’ vintage Pullman Carriages, with polished teak wall panels, carved ceilings, velvet banquettes and panoramic windows. The train, however, does only run between Montreux and Montboven, and Gruyère, Broc Fabrique and the return to Montreux is by bus.

Why we love it

Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. Plus, the stunning quintessentially Swiss landscapes of snowy peaks and flowering meadows and the chance to feel like you’ve walked into the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. Tickets include entry to the show dairy ‘La Maison du Gruyère’, the chocolate factory of Nestlé Cailler in Broc and coffee and chocolate croissants after leaving Montreux.
