Belgrade to Bar Train, Serbia to Montenegro
The Belgrade to Bar railway line connects Serbia to Montenegro, on a journey through the Balkans that skirts Bosnia and Hercegovina’s spectacular eastern border. On the 11-hour trip passengers get to see mountainous landscapes, beautiful canyons, clear rivers and traditional working farms. The route, which opened in 1976, winds down from the Serbian capital to Montenegro’s spectacular Adriatic coast.

Belgrade to Bar Railway route
The day train leaves Topcider station in Belgrade each morning at 9am, arriving at Bar in Montenegro at 8pm. You can also do this journey overnight, leaving at 9pm and arriving at 8am in the morning. The journey will take you through the foothills of the Dinaric Alps in southwest Serbia and through the Western Balkans with its impressive canyons and mountains. You will also get to enjoy part of the trip on the 198m-tall Mala Rijeka Viaduct, which is 499 metres long and one of the highest railway bridges in the world. Another insta-moment is when the train travels right alongside Skadar, the Balkans’ largest lake, which straddles the Montenegro-Albania border.
Belgrade to Bar trains
Put bluntly, the journey and the views are the thing here, not the trains. On this line you will have to slum it a bit in graffitied carriages that have seen better days. If you’re travelling on this line you will need to buy food and drink to take on board with you so give yourself time to stock up on provisions before you get on board.
