Kuranda Scenic Railway – Australia
North Queensland is home to The Wet Tropics, one of the most important World Heritage-listed rainforests. As one of the oldest forests in the world, it is home to many native plants and animals. The Kuranda Scenic Railway runs through this amazing part of Australia from the coastal city of Cairns, over the Great Dividing Range and on to the village of Kuranda on the Atherton Tableland.
On this unique journey you can almost touch the fragrant rainforest as you journey through this tropical paradise dotted with steep waterfalls and deep ravines. On the way, you’ll get to stop off at the Barron Falls. This is an amazing train journey that shouldn’t be missed if you’re in Queensland. The service operates every day of the year except on Christmas Day.

Kuranda Scenic Railway route
This journey is 37 kilometres long (rising 328 metres) and takes about one hour and 55 minutes. The train passes through Stratford, Freshwater (where it stops) and Redlynch before reaching Kuranda, a delightful village in the middle of the rain forest. At Kuranda you’ll find some great local shops and cafes. On the return trip, the train travels through Barron Gorge National Park where the train stops so you can see the impressive Barron Falls. On the way back, there are also views of many other smaller waterfalls including Stoney Creek Falls.

On board the train, passengers will find a commentary which gives information on the history of the railway and the rainforest. In timber-clad carriages you will get the chance to travel in a regular (heritage) carriage or first-class carriage (gold). There is plenty of opportunity on the train to enjoy the views from both sides of the carriages.
