Welsh Highland Railway
The Welsh Highland Railway, which runs for 26 miles through Snowdonia National Park, is Britain’s longest heritage railway line. Departing from Caernarfon, it passes the foot of Snowdon and the quaint village of Beddgelert, then through Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog. The full return journey is approximately six hours, however shorter trips (for example Porthmadog or Caernarfon to Beddgelert) are also available.
As well as getting to see some of the most famous parts of Wales from the comfort of the train, guests also get the chance to explore each destination as the train operates a hop-on hop-off system. Visitors can also enjoy a quick trip on the 3⁄4-mile long heritage which runs from Porthmadog and connects to the Welsh Highland Railway mainline at Pen-y-Mount Junction.

Welsh Highland Railway route
On the journey the trains climb from sea level to over 650ft on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging downhill to reach Beddgelert, situated in the heart of the National Park. They then travel though the dramatic Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog. At Porthmadog, the line connects with the Ffestiniog Railway and the short Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. From third to first class, passengers get to ride in comfortable carriages with large picture windows. There are also first-class luxury Pullman coaches on the line where freshly cooked food is delivered to your seat.
Welsh Highland Railway trains
The railway uses a mixture of fully restored steam and diesel locomotives to haul the trains through the National Park. Ranging in age from 1909 to 1985, these are some of the most powerful narrow-gauge locomotives in the world.
