The Titicaca Train route

The train travels between Cusco and Puno, the gateway to Lake Titicaca. The journey is pretty spectacular, whizzing through the Peruvian Andes, the Abra La Raya mountain pass at 14,271 feet of elevation and the commercial hub of Juliaca – where the train passes right through the central market. Finally, the train hugs the coast of the majestic Lake Titicaca before pulling into Puno station in the early evening.  The train covers 385 kilometres and takes a total of 10 hours, 30 minutes, departing Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The breathtaking Lake Titicaca

The Titicaca Train

With scenery so spectacular as sprawling plains, Andes mountains and, of course, Lake Titicaca, one might forget about the train and carriages itself – but the Titicaca train makes sure that doesn’t happen. The train is seriously luxurious, with 1920’s Pullman carriages, elegant interiors and seating, a lounge, two dining cars, a bar and open-air viewing platform. Breakfast is available to purchase, but a three-course lunch with wine, afternoon tea and a welcome cocktail are included in the ticket.

What we love

Spectacular scenery and spectacular carriages, this is without a doubt the most romantic and discerning way of travelling between Cusco and Puno. The train includes all the benefits of a five-star overnight train ten times the price, compacted down into a nice bite-size journey that doesn’t take up too much of your time.
